10 Classic Songs That Aren't As Serious As You Think
6. Peaches - Presidents of the United States of America
The Presidents of the United States of America occupy a bit of an interesting spot in the history of alternative rock music. Despite having one of the goofiest and longest names in the genre, the actual licks of a song like Lump were just heavy enough to hold their own against the likes of Primus and Faith No More from around the same time. Then Peaches happened, and the world got a load of how dirty the human mind really is.
When this song first starting getting big, the idea of this man going out into the country and eating a lot of peaches was supposedly the height of innuendo, given that the core of a peach might be not too dissimilar to genitalia. When you actually peel back the layers (so to speak) of the tune, the actual crux of the tune is just about...how awesome peaches are.
As a matter of fact, the whole song seems almost aware of how silly the subject matter is, being as much a parody of itself as it is about the actual conundrum of peaches coming from a can after being put there by a man at a factory downtown. Even though there's a ton of dissection you could do with their choice of fruit, what's the harm in just a doofy song about the wonders of canned fruit products?
