10 Classic Songs That Secretly Inspired Oasis
3. Bang A Gong - T Rex
For all of the titles you could give Oasis in the early days, music snobs was not one of them. Though both of the Gallaghers were often very outspoken about what they liked and didn't like, they were always fans of the kind of British pop from the '70s that made those early days of rock and roll sound so exciting. And when you want that kind of party atmosphere, it's not the worst idea to jump on the glam rock train.
When Noel was first putting together songs for Definitely Maybe, even the band was a bit uncomfortable with just how much the main riff from Cigarettes and Alcohol sounded like the T Rex classic Get It On (Bang a Gong). Noel was unphased by it though, saying that he could have cared less who it was coming from and that most of their audience wouldn't have known the difference anyway.
And it seems to have paid off for them in the end, since both songs are based on the signature blues licks that everyone starts out with and just recontextualized to suit both of their traditional styles. Because if there's anything that rock has been about, it's making music that would get a rise out of the older generation, and there's something punk rock about reinventing something so blatantly.
