10 Criminally Underrated Linkin Park Songs

1. My December – Hybrid Theory (2000)

Hybrid Theory is still adored two decades on from its release, and with good reason. The band’s signature sound remains immediately recognisable and the album is packed with nu-metal classics.

A possible criticism of this debut, however, is the lack of variety. Though the overall sound presented on the record is a nice mix of genres, the majority of tracks follow a similar pattern. As such, what’s great about ‘My December’ is how much it stands out from the rest of Hybrid Theory.

For one thing, there’s no screaming at all. Bennington delivers a subdued vocal performance set against a piano-driven instrumental which features plenty of sweet touches from Joe Hahn’s turntables. The use of the cello during the closing of the song is also a stroke of genius. This section is absolutely stunning and it’s a real shame it doesn’t last longer.

Indeed, ‘My December’ should have been more than just a bonus track. As well as being a beautiful standalone tune, it would have made for a nice change of pace if placed in the middle of the album.
