10 Dumbest Decisions Rock Bands Have Ever Made
5. Megadeth Going Pop
Every thrash band that was ever brought into existence has always had to deal with suffering from "same song-itis" ever now and again. For as much as the genre label might be a good fit for the Big 4 of thrash, it was clear that Metallica had other plans going into the '90s, with Load and Reload having a more alternative flavor to them. While Megadeth could experiment all they wanted as well, pop isn't a word that should belong in the same area code as the guys who brought you Peace Sells.
When put up against the likes of Slayer and Anthrax from around the same time, Risk is one of the most blatant misfires in heavy metal history, as Dave Mustaine hooked up with a pop producer to try and make something that would be a lot more ready for radio. Even though Dave had shot for making his version of Enter Sandman or Nothing Else Matters, the end result is a mess, with songs that sound like what millennial pop songs would be like if they had never made it past the first drafts stage.
Despite really trying to sell it, even Dave had to fess up to this album being one of the worst he's ever made, even calling Ecstasy one of the worst things he ever wrote. After all, this is Megadeth at the end of the day...not pop rock going through its edgy phase.
