10 Famous Musicians Who Just Do The Same Weird Thing Every Time
8. The 'Whoooa (Whoooooooa)' Bridge - The Kaiser Chiefs
The mid-2000s were an incredibly weird time for the UK. As a nation, we convinced itself that The Mighty Boosh was the very peak of surrealist entertainment, nu-rave meant that every nightclub was required to hand out glowsticks on the way in, and landfill indie gave everyone under the age of 25 a cultural touchstone that now, long since the wrong side of 30, nobody wants to let go of. At the heart of this, was The Kaiser Chiefs.
You see, inherently, indie music isn't great for big nightclubs. The verses are all too nuanced, the choruses ill-suited to sweaty hands-in-the-air 3am finales, but still, the genre was moving away from bars and function rooms into big venues that a few years prior were pumping out Born Slippy. The Kaiser Cheifs had a solution though, just shouting "WHOOA... WHOOOOOA... WHOOOOOOOOOOA!!" in every song.
This added a rush of dopamine to everyone on a dancefloor and, for an entire generation stuffed into skinny jeans, a much-needed surge of blood to the upper body. The techno and rave movements before them just turned the treble down and made sure the bouncers were confiscating anyone's ecstasy, but by giving every indie kit a guaranteed singalong moment (the lyrics are literally just one vowel) they made themselves indespensable to DJ's worldwide for the better part of two years.
In the years since, they've tweaked the screaming "WHOA"s into the more melodic "whoa-oh-oh-oh"s but, regardless, binning the lyrics in favour of just exhaling an exclamation has been a Kaiser Cheif staple for over 15 years now.
