10 Famous Rock Music Videos Made On A Small Budget

4. Hip To Be Square - Huey Lewis And The News

How close have you ever wanted to be to Huey Lewis' face? If the answer is "very", then firstly, you're weird, and secondly, there's a video just for you.

Taken from their multi-platinum album Fore!, Hip to Be Square is probably the band's most famous song not taken from a Back to the Future movie. It was in American Psycho instead.

For some reason, Hip to Be Square features a bunch of NFL players on backing vocals, none of whom make an appearance in the accompanying music video. Thank goodness, as that would have driven the price right up.

Instead, the video is a simple performance shot of the band playing the song, with one notable exception. It's zoomed in. Like, really zoomed in.

Using medical equipment fastened to the camera lenses, the director managed to get nice and tight on Lewis' face and the various instruments as the band played the song.

There's close-ups of cymbals, the insides of trumpets, and even a guy's moustache. Is it an impressive technical feat that was achieved on a relative low budget? Absolutely. It is also a bit creepy? It sure is.

Maybe that's why Patrick Bateman likes it so much.
