10 Forgotten 60s Rock Bands Worth Rediscovering
2. The Action
Kentish Town, North West London, was home to one of the greatest and most under-heard bands of the '60s. The Action, equally influenced by Mod subculture and Northern Soul, comprised Reg King (vocals), Alan King (rhythm guitar, vocals), Mike Evans (bass), Roger Powell (drums) and Pet Watson (lead guitar).
Like The Beatles, the band had a stint playing rough and ready venues in Germany, and briefly served as a backing band for other artists, before signing with Parlophone in 1965. No less than George Martin championed the band, and worked with them as producer but, despite Reg King's wonderful vocals, and the player's obvious skill and forward-thinking approach, The Action never scored a significant hit and, before the decade was out, this mighty outfit faded from view.
Thankfully, although The Action never released a full album, several compilations of their impressive work have since seen the light of day. Fans of The Who will surely appreciated these classy, muscular cuts.
