10 Greatest Anti-Love Songs In Rock Music History
1. Black - Pearl Jam
There tends to be a bit of a bad reputation surrounding the emo side of music in rock and roll. Ever since the turn of the century, there have been fans who will turn their nose up at anything that seems to be too emotional, feeling that it would be a little too sappy for traditional rock and roll. When the grunge wave of musicians let their feelings show though, it was enough to tap right into your soul.
Long before Pearl Jam was a concrete band, this was one of the first songs that Eddie Vedder ever wrote for the group, taking the skeleton from one of Stone Gossard's riff tapes. Being inspired by a romance that had gone sour, the entire song doesn't really seem to have any rage or anger throughout the whole thing. Compared to the harsh sounds of Jeremy, Eddie feels oddly calm here, as he looks around at everything and imagining what it was like when his significant other was still there with him.
Given the fallout, Eddie sounds like a man who knows that he screwed up and realizes that he has to live with it and let his love go on to better things. If anything, Eddie seems to wish her peace wherever she goes, only with the regret that she will one day be a star in someone else's sky. Whereas most bands would try to tell off an ex for kicking them to the curb, Eddie is beyond those kind of jabs. All that's left is pure pain.
