I mean, when you lose someone that talented in such a quick manner, there's no real way to recover from that in one fell swoop. Though the road back to normalcy was going to be a difficult one, Dave Grohl actually found his way back to sanity by making his own demos.

Never wanting to step on Cobain's toes in Nirvana, Grohl had stockpiled his favorite songs from his backlog and decided to record a handful of them just for fun. As he started to master the tapes though, they sounded good...really good... like "this could actually be a hit song" good.
