10 Greatest Comebacks In Rock History

7. LA Woman - The Doors

The Doors were a shock to the system when they broke onto the LA club scene in the late '60s. With Jim Morrison out front with his tortured poet aesthetic, the world had found a new class of rock frontman who was unafraid to speak his mind whenever he stepped up to the mic. However, the band's well of ideas had started to run dry as the '70s began.

Experimenting with jazz and blues rock styles, the start of the LA Woman sessions saw the band's producer outright leave the studio, thinking that the band were dried up and couldn't produce a substantial record. Though Morrison was hitting the booze a bit too hard, the band created one of their most spellbinding releases once they returned to the studio.

Across 10 tracks, this record sounds like the band we got to know back in the '60s, only filtered through a blues rock lens. Instead of the more tedious blues rock of their peers, Morrison's baritone adds a layer of menace to the record, from the trip through downtown Los Angeles on the title track to the tortured killer looking for a ride home on "Riders on the Storm." Morrison may not have been with us for too long after this record, but it's anyone's guess where the Doors could have gone from this return to form.
