10 Greatest Comebacks In Rock History
6. Welcome to My Nightmare - Alice Cooper
As the '60s started giving way to new creative ideas, Alice Cooper became one of the first notorious rock and roll villains. With each passing record, Cooper was trying everything to infuriate parents and excite his audiences, from songs about dead babies to tales of rock and roll debauchery. Cooper may have reveled in his reputation, but he was also making some enemies in his own band.
After the album Muscle of Love, the rest of the band quit the group, thinking that the Alice character was starting to overshadow the music. To make sure that Alice would make it as a solo artist, Cooper and manager Shep Gordon put all their money into making Welcome to My Nightmare, which became one of the greatest shock rock albums ever made.
Coming together with producer Bob Ezrin, this record carefully balances Cooper's classic horror tropes with more theatrical production, like the Vincent Price cameo in the middle of "Devil's Food" and the ode to necrophilia on "Cold Ethyl." There are even some outlandish ideas that end up going over well like the anti-abuse anthem "Only Women Bleed," which was the first sign of Alice's vulnerable sign. It was hard enough trying to find an audience amid disturbed parents, but Alice Cooper took the gamble on theatrical rock and came out on the other side unscathed.
