10 Greatest Covers Of Beatles Songs

9. The Feelies - Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey

The Beatles’ whacky songs often rank among their worst, but when done with a smirk and a sneer (i.e John Lennon’s comedy efforts), they could also be riotously fun. Case in point: The White Album’s "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey", a song comprised mainly of aphorisms used by the Maharishi, with whom the band spent some difficult time during their latter days.

There are many disparate explanations as to the song’s subject matter, but when played at top speed by New Jersey post-punkers The Feelies, it doesn’t matter too much. One of many bands more directly influenced by the groups that took their cues from The Beatles (Big Star, R.E.M), The Feelies treat the track with little to no reverence; they sound as though they’re trying to get it over with as quickly as possible.

For its ramshackle carelessness, it’s all the more brilliant. Instead of Lennon’s rock ‘n’ roll influenced power vocals, the track is delivered with a nervous yelp, as though they fear getting in trouble for even attempting a song with such legendary roots. It gives the already strange tune a neurotic edge and relentless pace without changing much about it other than pace and delivery.
