10 Greatest Diss Tracks In Rock History
7. Mechanix - Megadeth
It's almost inconceivable to imagine the heartache Dave Mustaine felt once he rode with Metallica across the country. After having a hand in the band's development and even writing a few of the best riffs of their early years, his alcohol abuse on the ride to New York bought him a Greyhound bus ticket back to San Francisco. Though Mustaine was able to recover from this ego blow nicely with Megadeth, he was just getting started when it comes to taking the piss out of his previous band.
Even though he specifically asked that Metallica not use any of his song ideas, you can find traces of Mustaine's licks all over their debut record Kill Em All, with the Four Horsemen being the most overt standout. Not wanting to be outdone, Mustaine threw together a new arrangement of the tune with lyrics of his own under the name the Mechanix, which became one of the standout tracks on Killing is my Business. In this version, the thrash juggernaut of Metallica gets even faster, as Mustaine delivers some of the sleaziest lyrics he can.
Even as the years have gone on, Dave has not really denied his spite towards his former band in this song, going so far as to call the two different versions "our way" and "their way" when they play it live. The years of bad blood may be over, but it's songs like these that show that some of those wounds never heal properly.
