10 Greatest Drummers In Hard Rock
9. Travis Barker - Blink-182
When it comes to first listening to rock music, Blink-182 feels like the entry level band by comparison to other acts. Hell, there's a whole generation of kids who have started bands of their own thanks to the trademark pop punk energy coming from songs like All the Small Things and the Rock Show. While the guitar parts of Blink's songs are pretty basic at the end of the day, even the seasoned pros don't want to touch Travis Barker's drum performances.
As opposed to just the straight ahead punk drums that you're used to, Barker's mix of different rhythmic structures helped Blink become a much more complex musical monster. From the minute Travis starts his drum fills on Enema of the State, you can tell there's something magical going on, as he goes from punk rock ferocity to pulling out some random syncopated fill and making it work within the confines of a pop song.
That kind of experimentation is what made Blink capable of pushing their music forward, with albums like the self-titled giving Barker a chance to warp minds with brushes on I Miss You and even just crazy stick work on the beginning of Always. Even if you think of yourself as competent behind the kit, you're barely scratching the surface if you haven't gone to the Travis Barker University of Drumming.
