10 Greatest Hard Rock Songs Of The 1980s
6. Live Wire - Motley Crue
It's time that most fans of Motley Crue realize that Too Fast For Love is probably the best album in their catalog. Even though they may have reached far greater heights and even more great tunes after this debut record, this had the same street rat attitude that Guns N Roses would be selling to us 5 years later, with a lot more success. And if you need any indication on just how hard this record slaps, the Crue have never sounded hungrier than on Live Wire.
Despite being known as the kings of hair metal back in the day, there's a lot more going on with this song than just the glamorous side of rock and roll. From the breakneck speed to the nasty attitude behind Vince Neil's vocals, this sounds a lot closer to a punk rock song than your average glam metal track. Hell, for the intense speed alone, Mick Mars plays with enough proficiency to make James Hetfield jealous.
This kind of magic wasn't lost on the rest of the band either, with Tommy Lee later saying that this song was the moment where Motley Crue really became themselves. If you want to be pedantic, you could call this a more slipshot delivery of what would eventually happen on Dr. Feelgood. But as it stands, this is the baby steps from a band about to morph into a giant.
