10 Greatest Old School Death Metal Albums

5. Obituary - Cause Of Death

Obituary - 1990 - Cause Of DeathTrack List: 1. Infected 2. Body Bag 3. Chopped In Half 4. Circle of the Tyrants (Celtic Frost Cover) 5. Dying 6. Find the Arise 7. Cause of Death 8. Memories Remain 9. Turned Inside Out Stand Out Track - Chopped in Half, a perennial fan favourite and Obituary at their best. Cause of Death, released in 1990, is the second album by Floridian band Obituary and is an undisputed classic in the history of Death Metal. The only Obituary record to feature the lead guitar talents of Death and Thrash supremo James Murphy (Death, Testament, Disincarnate) this is a grinding record which utilises varying tempos to bludgeon the listener into submission. One of the few bands not to rely on all out speed (don't be fooled, these guys still rip it up when required) the dynamics on this record work seamlessly to create an overall atmosphere of pervading dread. Vocalist John Tardy adds another element entirely, his unique and animalistic vocal tricks really must be heard to be believed. Tardy often dismisses with actual lyrics and simply grunts and howls along with the noise emanating from his band-mates; an approach which serves Obituary extremely well and helped distinguish them from identikit bands. A classy release with some epic tracks, this is Obituary's magnum opus.

I love Heavy Metal, and generally anything that involves a guitar and loud noises, so I figured it was about time I put all the useless information in my head to good use and start writing a few things. Most of the time I'll be writing nonsense but occasionally I may surprise myself and appear half-way knowledgable.....but you can be the judge of that. Thanks for your fleeting attention!
