10 Greatest Rock Music Cover Songs Of The 2010s

6. Rocky Mountain Way - Godsmack

Godsmack, a nu-metal outfit perhaps best known for doing that song from The Scorpion King, released an album called Live & Inspired in 2012.

As you might have guessed, the “Live” part was a collection of concert recordings, but this was a two-CD set. The other disc contained four studio-recorded cover versions of famous songs, including their take on Rocky Mountain Way.

Originally a hit for Joe Walsh of Eagles fame, Godsmack took the song and made it much, much angrier. Maybe they stepped on its foot a bunch of times or blocked its parking space. Whatever they did, it worked.

This take on what was originally a country-inflected blues number goes hard, matching the band’s usual style of hyper-aggressive macho rock. The thing is, it fits perfectly, with the minor grips laid out in the original becoming major issues through singer Sully Erna’s furious tones.

There will be some people who think this goes too far and taints the original, but covers are all about experimentation, and Godsmack definitely weren’t afraid to push this song to the limit.
