10 Greatest Rock Music Cover Songs Of The 2010s

5. Because The Night - Garbage & Screaming Females

Record Store Day is always a fun time to be a music fan, as artists from across the industry get together to promote the vendors they love and help keep independent stores alive.

A staple of this celebration is bands covering one another and, in 2013, Garbage and Screaming Females got together to lay down a new version of Patti Smith’s iconic Because the Night. The two bands had been on tour together the previous year and had duetted on the song live several times, and so it was decided that it should be captured in the studio, and not a drop of the magic was lost.

Singers Shirley Manson and Marisa Paternoster blend together perfectly, their voices slotting beautifully in with one another. Paternoster also contributes a killer guitar solo to round the piece off. Seriously, it goes on for ages and is rad.

There’s something special about two proudly feminist bands coming together to celebrate a female artist as important as Smith for such a good cause. The fact that the song slaps is just the icing on the cake.
