10 Greatest Rock Music Videos Of The 1990s

9. Pulp - Common People

This video is bolstered by the ever-engaging performance of frontman Jarvis Cocker. The stick thin, impeccably dressed frontman is a captivating watch, pouting, shucking, ironically acting out the song. He’s by some way the most charismatic singer on the Britpop scene, and he chews the scenery with aplomb here.

The video is shot in a fantastic looking London nightclub, complete with ‘7os period detail. In typical Pulp fashion the song and the video are packed with quintessentially British detail - they pay homage to a scene from The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine film, in which second-long clips movement are repeated. Here, the dancers on the tiled floor are trapped in their routines.

Pulp even went to the trouble of creating a dance routine of their own to cap off the video, which bizarrely never gained a great deal of traction. It probably doesn’t look quite as good without the gangly frame and unbreakable confidence of Cocker.
