10 Greatest Shows In Rock History
5. Nirvana Unplugged in New York
When talking about the greatest concerts in rock history, you're normally expecting something big. This is rock after all, and the masses really need something loud and abrasive to sink their teeth into whenever they see someone tearing through their hits. So how the hell did one of the most somber gigs imaginable finds its way to the upper echelons of rock history?
Well...the main reasoning behind Nirvana's Unplugged concert revolves around how different it was. As much as other Unplugged shows had come and gone, this was just one performance of Kurt Cobain's music in its more raw form imaginable. Even for some of the technical foul ups, this actually introduced a more gentle Kurt than the one we were used to seeing in the Smells Like Teen Spirit video, with songs like Pennyroyal Tea taking things down to just a microphone and Kurt playing guitar.
This is far from just a chilled out acoustic session though, with Where Did You Sleep Last Night having one of Kurt's most intense vocal performances and even a moment where you can practically see the light leaves his eyes as he sings the final words. Since this was one of the final shows that we would get before Kurt's suicide, it's like you're hearing the man sing at his own funeral.
