10 Greatest Supergroups In Rock History
9. Heaven and Hell
The '00s really stood as a dark time for the heavyhitters of the metal community. While acts like Metallica and Megadeth were going through some of the rougher patches in their discography, Black Sabbath was in the midst of a legal battle over the name rights, with the chances of reuniting with Ozzy Osbourne sounding like a pipe dream as time went on. However, Sabbath is much more than just Ozzy though.
Even though it may not count to put this under another moniker, Heaven and Hell is a completely different beast than what Sabbath proper were doing at the time, with Ronnie James Dio coming back into the fold to bring his banshee screams to Tony Iommi's riffs. Though Vinny Appice was brought on to fill Bill Ward's shoes, his drumming style fits like a glove, catering both to Ronnie's voice and the thump of Geezer Butler's bass.
Reuniting for the album The Devil You Know, this is the real return of the doomy riffs that many Sabbath fans were hoping for, with songs like Bible Black sounding like they've just been pulled from the crypt to ignite the metallic fire once again. While the honeymoon period would be short lived when Dio died just a few years later, this is the resurrection of Sabbath that many fans wondered could even exist anymore.
