10 Greatest Supergroups In Rock History
8. Them Crooked Vultures
Most of rock's vocabulary in the '00s involved going back to the basics of rock. Rather than have more experimental material to draw from, rock's elderstatesmen as well as newer acts like The Strokes were going back to the early days of rock and roll, with garage rock being their calling card. On the other hand, what made rock so good in the first place wasn't volume; it was the heaviness.
Being some of the heaviest players in the business, Them Crooked Vultures revolved around Dave Grohl behind the drums, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin on bass, and Joshua Homme from Queens of the Stone Age on guitar. With only one record to their name, this is about as good as it sounds on paper, as Homme and Grohl already collaborated on Songs for the Deaf a few years before. However, putting Jonesy's bass into the mix brings a whole new dimension to the sound, with songs like Dead End Friends having more muscle than any garage rock act could hope for.
It also doesn't hurt that Homme's signature low guitar tunings haven't gone anywhere, making every swinging riff feel low to the ground alongside the proper arrangements of Jones. Though these guys have clearly been busy with their own stuff as of late, it's anyone guess whether we'll see Them Crooked Vultures rear their head again.
