10 Greatest Supergroups In Rock History
7. Velvet Revolver
It's no easy task when you try to replace a legendary performer. No matter how much you may want to make new music, there's always a chance that the new ingredient is going to be compared to their predecessor until the end of time. Even though that's exactly what happened when the Guns N Roses guys got together, deciding to go in a completely opposite direction for Velvet Revolver is the best move they could have made.
Rather than find an Axl Rose clone, Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum hooked up with Stone Temple Pilots' frontman Scott Weiland to create some of the most down and dirty rock of any musicians' career. Despite the weird clash of hair metal mixing with grunge, Weiland does an amazing job playing off of Slash's riffs, as he commands the stage like an update of Jim Morrison. This isn't just GNR with a grunge chaser though, with songs like Slither and Sucker Train Blues having a much grittier sound than stuff like Paradise City.
Even though this is certainly a different look for each of these acts, the straight up hard rock on both Libertad and Contraband can rarely be denied. Velvet Revolver eventually fell apart due to Weiland's antics, but when they were on, it was absolutely explosive from front to back.
