10 Greatest Supergroups In Rock History

6. Queen + Paul Rodgers

The thought of replacing Freddie Mercury in Queen should not even be a question among rock fans. Even though the rock royals eventually took to the road with Adam Lambert, there's no mistaking that this is a celebration of Freddie's music rather than a bold new artistic vision. Despite Queen being Freddie Mercury at the best of times, things took a bit of a weird turn once the '00s rolled around.

Looking to have some fun with some new material, Brian May and Roger Taylor eventually hooked up with Paul Rodgers from Bad Company, a singer who Mercury always aspired to when he was coming up the ranks. As a result, most of the album the Cosmos Rocks is the best kind of throwback you can expect, with the bluesy swagger of Rodgers blending well with the trademark polished sound of Queen. While there's no disputing that this is a blues rock affair, May's guitar tone is still unmistakable, as he weaves together symphonies without so much as breaking a sweat.

This eventually led to a worldwide tour, where Rodgers performed a mix of the new stuff, Bad Company songs, and even taking on some of the more rocking Queen material whenever he had the chance. Even though no one's going to come close to dethroning Freddie Mercury as the greatest frontman of all time, this is still a welcome substitute that you don't want to miss out on.
