10 Greatest Tribute Songs In Rock History
4. Friend Of A Friend - Foo Fighters
Much like you could argue the entire previous album was for Paul Gray, it's possible to say that the entirety of Foo Fighters' existence is in tribute to Kurt Cobain.
After the Nirvana frontman's suicide in 1994, drummer Dave Grohl threw himself headfirst into his new project as a way of coping with the loss. What began as an exercise in therapy quickly blossomed into one of the biggest bands of the modern age.
For their fifth album In Your Honor, the band provided two discs of music. One was full of heavier rock songs like Best of You and DOA, whilst the other contained softer acoustic tracks like this one.
Friend of a Friend was written back in 1990 about Grohl's first interactions with Cobain and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic. He performs the song entirely on his own, reflecting on Cobain's more destructive habits.
It's not a shining review of the man like some other tributes are, but would that ever have worked for Cobain? He was a complex individual and Grohl beautifully captures that in a way that only someone close to the man ever could.
