10 Hard Rock Albums MUCH Better Than You Remember
8. One by One - Foo Fighters
Any casual listen to the Foo Fighters is liable to get you in a good mood. Whether it's throwing on the care-free guitars on Learn to Fly or the all-out assault of the Pretender, any Foos song will either be able to make you feel happy or get you hyped as hell. However, that kind of sunshine and roses feeling doesn't always translate to the band that's playing the music.
After coming off of a tour for There is Nothing Left To Lose, the Foos were a bit weary with each other, with Taylor Hawkins suffering a near fatal drug overdose and Dave Grohl playing drums in Queens of the Stone Age to cool out. By the time everyone got back to make a record, things had reached a breaking point, culminating in an album that they threw away and re-recorded from scratch.
Though Grohl himself doesn't have a whole lot of nice things to say about One by One, that kind of tension turned into solid gold across this record, from the angst-ridden opener All My Life to the bright ray of hope on Times Like These
The experimentation even works on this album, with songs like the slowburning Tired of You and the mini epic closer Come Back being a precursor to the acoustic/electric dichotomy that would unfold on In Your Honor a little while later. While this record may have been born from a place of pain, you sometimes need those pitfalls in order to reach your true potential.
