4. No. 4 - Stone Temple Pilots
At the end of the '90s, it looked like Stone Temple Pilots had done the impossible.
After being labeled as full on pariahs of the grunge scene with their record Core, these rockers from San Diego did a great job at standing out amidst their brethren up North with alternative rock masterpieces like Purple and Tiny Music... Though No.4 seems to be looked at as the moment where things started to go wrong, there's still a lot of fun to be had here.
Granted, you can tell that the tension between Scott Weiland and the rest of the group has reached a breaking point, with the production alone hinting at the drug abuse prevalent during the sessions. On the other hand, that shoddy work actually ends up playing to the songs' advantage, as these glam-focused riffs end up sounding like their coming out of a beat-up garage.
There are also a few experimentations with more extreme sides of rock, with Down being one of the heavier songs to come from their early period and Sour Girl serving as the weirdest ballad that any alternative rock band has ever made.
Since everyone basically knew that this era of STP was about to implode, this was a sign that the final days weren't all that bad.
