10 Hard Rock Albums That Are Hated By The Fans

6. Music from the Elder - KISS

Part of the appeal of KISS' music in their prime was that you didn't need to think too hard about what they were saying most of the time. The greater focus was always on the show half the time, and hearing them just talk about the rock and roll lifestyle of sex and drugs was enough to keep you entertained while you watched the bombs go off and the bass player breathing fire. It was almost a real life cartoon, so what made them think that they needed to make us think?

Granted, you could see why the band were wanting to shake up the usual formula, having to kick out drummer Peter Criss the album before and leaving the rockers behind on Dynasty. Fans can appreciate a few poppy tracks, but Music from the Elder was more confusing to fans than anything else, as the band tried to make a concept record centered around mythic legends and falling flat on their face. Even when bringing Bob Ezrin (who would eventually make Pink Floyd's The Wall), the whole thing feels like a disjointed mess, with every song sounding like it's halfway to making a point only to give up halfway through.

The fans weren't the only ones pissed about the sudden change, with Ace Frehley refusing to play on some of the album, sending in his parts via FedEx, and only listening to half of the album before throwing the record against the wall. If KISS had only tried to get back to something heavy like they did on Creatures of the Night a year later, we would have been spared this mythic tale to search for...something.
