10 Hard Rock Bands That Destroyed Their Own Career

5. Rage Against the Machine

At the start of the '90s, Rage Against the Machine was one of the few bands that seemed to sprout up out of nowhere. Compared to the last traces of hair metal that were clinging for dear life and the influx of alternative music that was about to be sweeping the nation, there was no other band combining these hard riffs and militant hip hop flows quite like Rage did. What's even more puzzling is how swiftly this kind of music started to fizzle out.

From one record to the next, you could hear Rage getting more and more in tune with each other. While their debut set them up nicely, the embellishments put on albums like Evil Empire and the Battle of Los Angeles turned them into one of the most interesting voices in the world of heavy music. While things were certainly gelling musically, the same could not be said for the other sides of the group.

With each member being very outspoken about their views, the disagreements between Rage became less about the music and more about the business side of things. Even fights erupting over T-shirt designs were not uncommon. Rather than just sort out the problems, the end result saw Zack de la Rocha fading into the background while the rest of Rage formed Audioslave with Chris Cornell from Soundgarden. Now that we have a reunion on the horizon, hopefully we will see that same anger brought to the fold once again.
