10 Hard Rock Bands Who Had TWO Great Singers
1. David Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar - Van Halen
Throughout the late 70's and early 80's, Van Halen had all the trappings of a perfect hard rock band. Each member brought a unique spin to their typical band position, with Alex Van Halen's jungle rhythms offset by his brother Eddie's maniacal fretwork. Though every member had a frontman personality, David Lee Roth was the main draw to the band with his fantastic range and audience rapport.
Every single Van Halen show felt like a great big party, with Roth holding court as the king of hell-raising. The whole thing seemed to be perfect, but people got a sobering message when Roth announced his departure. This was the hard rock equivalent of Mick Jagger leaving the Stones, with the main presence of the hard rock powerhouse gone. For any band, this is the time when your career is killed, but Van Halen refused to go quietly.
The band quickly bounced back from hard times with the arrival of veteran rocker Sammy Hagar, whose voice opened new possibilities for the band. As opposed to Dave's blues wailer delivery, Hagar displayed much more range, which made for great original material while giving the old Van Halen classics an updated boost.
Any band would be left out to dry after a singer of Roth's caliber left, but Van Halen's new era with Sammy Hagar proved the band could survive even the deadliest of blows.
