10 Hard Rock Music Covers You Wish Never Happened

7. I Love Rock 'N' Roll – Britney Spears

Joan Jett was the Queen of rock 'n' roll. From the mid 1970s through to the '80s she found herself on the front line of rock, proving that women had a place in a predominately male heavy genre. In 1981 she released her version of I Love Rock 'n' Roll, originally written by the band Arrows some years earlier.

Jett's version reached number one on the Billboards charts for seven weeks, and became as well known, if not more so, than Arrows version.

Britney spears 2001 rendition, was a different story, however. Although she has stated it was Arrows original track that she had been keen to cover, she (or her management) were undoubtedly trying to channel Joan Jett's sensibilities. The results were less than impressive.

The music video didn't help things. It was your typical Britney Spears video from that era, plenty of sexualised choreography, but with the edition of as many rock cliches as it's possible to cram into three and half minutes. Leather jackets, leather belts, motorcycles, giant amplifiers and the routine guitar smash, oh and more leather...
