10 Hard Rock Music Covers You Wish Never Happened
6. Smells Like Teen Spirit – Take That
Much like the previous entry this was another example of pop stars trying to embody rock star sensibilities, only for it to result in a shudder inducing performance.
Admittedly, the band played their own instruments for this number, which they can be commended for, when the standard practise for boy bands in this time was to perform to a backing track. Having said that, it didn't take guitarist Mark Owen long to demonstrate that he wouldn't last a second in the grunge scene. Missing the verse and sheepishly dropping in half a bar late, his guitar mishap was only topped by Gary Barlow floundering around the stage like a male stripper and missing numerous vocal cues.
Later in the song, Owen's attempted the solo with all the competence of a teenager who's just watched their first 'how to play guitar' video on YouTube. There's an endearing moment when Owen pulls a face to the crowd, as a child might when they've figured out that plucking a guitar string makes a sound.
Kurt Cobain would have been rolling in his grave at this, a manufactured pop band capitalising on a song about breaking free of teenage isolation and social conformity. It's a lot to take in.
