10 Hard Rock Song Lyrics That Nobody Understands
9. Say Yes, At Least Say Hello
From Metallica's late-'90s foray into short hair, eyeliner and E-flat tuning, came Load and Reload - a pair of complementary records originally intended for release as a double album. It was here that Metallica briefly shifted their setup away from the heavy metal and thrash metal sounds of their earlier career and took a journey through the hallowed halls of hard rock.
The Memory Remains, on 1997's Reload, has become one of the era's most enduring tracks, and is still played at most of their live concerts today. Embedded in the coda's lyric-less chant, which is sung by the fans during live performances, there are the spoken word lines 'Say yes, at least say hello', by the song's guest vocalist Marianne Faithfull. Often overlooked, ignored or interpreted as meaningless, these lines are a reference to Marilyn Monroe's last film, The Misfits, and are designed to reflect the theme and meaning of the song: the deterioration of Hollywood stardom.
