10 Heaviest Metallica Songs
1. Fight Fire with Fire
After Kill Em All was unleashed on the world, Metallica was a metal band with a few rough edges that had the potential to be something massive. While many assumed big things lay ahead for the group, no one expected them to mature so quickly once you popped in Ride the Lightning.
Starting off with a baroque sounding section, the song's guitars slowly creep in like a thunderstorm about to demolish you. The way the band performs these riffs sound like absolute anarchy but are played to perfection when analyzed more closely. Centered around the fore coming apocalypse, "Fight Fire With Fire" is Metallica flexing all of their metal muscles, from the relentless double bass hits from Lars Ulrich to Kirk Hammett's crushing lead work. Even James Hetfield's harmonied guitar solos with Hammett use unusual chords and sonic left turns that leave the listener dumbfounded.
Hetfield's vocal performance is also ahead of its time with its spectacular growl and atonal grit on the line "WE ALL SHALL DIE." By the song's final seconds, the last remaining audio left is the remnants of what sounds like an amplifier exploding, bringing a stellar ending to one of the most visceral performances Metallica have ever put on record.
