10 Hidden Songs You Didn't Know Were On Albums
7. The Jam - English Rose
English Rose sits towards the midpoint of the Jam’s classic album All Mod Cons and is the penultimate song on Side A. English Rose is a romantic folk song love letter to England and despite being another incredible song on the album it remains untitled and unlisted on the track listing. Technically it’s track five however the Paul Weller solo performance was left unlisted as the songwriter was so embarrassed about his honesty.
The song subverts a lot of issues surrounding British masculinity and reveals Weller’s sentimental sensitive side as he sings about the country and women that he loves and is estranged from. The singer described the song to Mojo magazine as him being “emotionally naked” and has stood the test of time as showing love to working class Britain, it’s become a classic even if Weller was too embarrassed to give it a name.
