10 Highly Underrated Rock Music Album Covers

6. Turn Back - Toto

Tony Lane was a graphic artist who worked on some of the most famous album covers of all time. He designed the artwork for Carly Simon's Boys in the Trees, Creedence Clearwater Revival's Mardi Gras, Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Michael Jackson's Bad.

When it comes to rock music though, his greatest work can be found on the front of Toto's 1981 record Turn Back.

Using a plain white background to accentuate the design, Lane created a minimalist interpretation of the band's name in black, paintbrush stroke-like lettering.

The real genius comes with the inclusion of a single line of red towards the bottom of the cover, which total transforms this picture into a work of art.

The last three letters of the band's name soon become the eyes and nose of a face, with the red line serving as the mouth. This cover is a beautifully striking piece of work that wouldn't look out of place in any modern art gallery.

Sadly, because Turn Back turned out to be one of the band's worst-selling albums, very few people actually got to marvel in Lane's excellent output.
