10 Highly Underrated Rock Music Album Covers
5. Watch - Manfred Mann’s Earth Band
Manfred Mann's Earth Band's eighth album Watch from 1978 was, weirdly, a huge success in West Germany. It stayed in their charts for 69 weeks and reached a peak of third place on its way to achieving a platinum sales certificate.
Perhaps the West German people were taken in by this album's impressive cover art? Or maybe it was something to do with the music, who's to say?
The front of Watch is a sight to behold. The top half is dominated by a huge white cloud, expertly recreated to appear both fluffy and menacing all at once.
On the ground below, a man in a yellowy-brown suit is charging down a runway, flapping his arms as if he were trying to achieve lift. He's heading straight towards the cloud, presumably because he also thinks it's made of marshmallows.
There's just something so quaint about this scene. The soft brushstrokes and colours are really inviting, luring you into a false sense of security as the protagonist ventures forth into the unknown.
Did that man ever fly? Who knows, but fingers crossed there wasn't a cliff at the end of that runway.
