Rock fans all around the world have been accustomed to the phrase dad rock at this point. No matter how much you might love the lick of a song, there's a good chance it could fall into uncool territory if you put some dumb lyrics on top of it. You've heard of dad rock...even get a load of dad rap though?
It almost feels weird saying that considering that the lyrics to Welcome to the Party were probably meant to sound dangerous at least at some point. When you sit down with Kid Rock's words though, it reads like some of the most juvenile attempts at humor ever conceived, especially with his flow sounding like he's trying and failing to hop on a Sugarhill Gang track. C'mon man, even rap at the time was moving away from stuff like that.
No, but the real tragedy comes when you see the video for this song, which is among one of the dorkiest things to have ever come out of the '90s. Even for hardcore Kid Rock fans, looking back on this wannabe pimp persona trying to act all tough at a pool party just reads like a dad trying to act cool with the kids these days. Say what you want to about Kid Rock going forward, but this is not a party you're going to want to stay at for too much longer.
