10 Incredible Rock Singers Who Were In TWO Great Bands
4. David Coverdale - Deep Purple/Whitesnake
Deep Purple were one of the kings of the hard rock scene when they first broke in the early 70's. Their combination of jazz, blues, and rock created some of the most exciting live performances the rock genre had ever seen. Even when their main voice Ian Gillan departed, the band found an equally skilled frontman whose star power couldn't be contained to just one band.
Emerging from relative obscurity, David Coverdale stepped up to the mic on the band's album Burn and delivered some of the most soulful vocals the hard rock world had ever seen at the time. As the band progressed, their sound became much more indicative of R&B, which didn't sit well with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. After the band called it a day, Coverdale wasn't finished gracing us with his trademark pipes.
Originally striking out on his own with a solo album called Whitesnake, Coverdale found his music better suited to a band environment, and quickly put together a group under the moniker of his debut solo release. Once it was kicked into high gear, Whitesnake became darlings of the glam metal scene, with songs like "Here I Go Again" and "Is This Love?" becoming mainstays on MTV.
In one fell swoop, Coverdale had run the gamut from soulful crooner to hard rock god to high-haired heartthrob.
