10 Insane Stories Behind Classic Albums
1. Sgt. Peppers - The Beatles
Towards the end of 1966, the Beatles were on the verge of a real breakthrough. After starting to go down the experimental rabbit hole with Revolver, taking time off the road led to them making some of their greatest songs yet, with Strawberry Fields Forever paving the way for the colossal Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Along with that genius came drugs though....a LOT of drugs.
Around the same time, the Fabs had just started to experiment with LSD, which prompted them to write some of their more surreal material like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Though they rarely used anything during the sessions, John Lennon did make the mistake of bringing acid to one of the sessions after mistaking it for an upper. With him spacing out in the middle of takes, producer George Martin made the mistake of thinking Lennon had fallen ill, after which he took him up to the roof to get some air.
As Martin just waited for Lennon to come down, he couldn't get over the stuff he was saying, as Lennon did nothing but look up at the stars and shout "Aren't they fantastic?" to anyone within earshot. Aside from this one incident though, The Beatles turned in one of the greatest albums of the modern age, paving way for both the Summer of Love as well as for the rest of the world to follow in their footsteps.
