9. Boston - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Originally released in 2002 - and then again in 2013 - this festive tune features Tom Scholz on vocals offering a rather feminine sounding rendition of the classic Christmas stalwart. It's certainly got a punch to it and remains a spirited rendition of the traditional English carol, whose origin remains unclear - though the earliest surviving record dates from 1760 - it came to prominence in 1843 when featured in Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. This version also features Kimberley Dahme on bass, Gary Pihl and Scholz on guitar and Tom Hambridge on Drums. It was recorded shortly after "Love, Life & Hope" - their first album of new material in almost a decade - which doesn't feature this track. The song also features a number of cover versions from Annie Lennox, The Barenaked Ladies and Erasure among them, but the preference remains on the only one with a guitar solo.
