10 Major Albums Where Everything Went Wrong
2. Invincible - Michael Jackson
All of the worst records in the world are paved on good intentions. No matter how much people may put out some weapons-grade trash in their time, it's not like they were deliberately trying to screw up their sound. There is a right and wrong to market yourself though, and the King of Pop really deserved a better fate than what happened with Invincible.
After getting way too self indulgent in the '90s and coming off of the child abuse allegations he was dealing with around the same time, Michael Jackson really needed a showstopping album to put him in good favors with the public again. It would seem like an easy fix with Invincible's embrace of electronic and dance features...except when Sony decided to put it through the woodchipper.
In the months that followed the album's development, Sony managed to keep Michael from releasing the album how he wanted it to, only limiting the press to one single music video. Think about that for a minute...one of the greatest music video auteurs of the modern day and you only let him produce one for his big comeback...that's some insanely harsh treatment. Instead of the grand return that most Jackson fans might have expected from him at this point, Invincible just felt like an album that was sent kicking and screaming out the door.
