Of all the 60s rock albums to feature cover art of a fruit drawn by a world famous pop artist, The Velvet Underground & Nico's self-titled debut has got to be in the top ten. Maybe even the top eight.

Lou Reed's first taste of fame is still regarded as one of the best albums ever; a swirling cocktail of rock 'n' roll, avant garde, art pop, and just about everything in between. It might not have been appreciated in its own time, but now, its influence is undeniable.

Considering it's so iconic, with a legendary cover to match, it's not a massive surprise that the album comes with a hefty price tag.

An original 1967 copy, complete with rare picture of actor Eric Emerson upside down on the reverse, will set prospective buyers back an average of $1,003.80. This is the version where the banana on the front cover peels away, a feature that was discontinued with subsequent releases.

The banana underneath the sticker is flesh-coloured, so you can understand why that was stopped.

The Velvet Underground & Nico is a piece of music history and history don't come cheap.
