It's no secret that people were thinking that rock was on its deathbed at the turn of the century. For as much of a wasteland that the charts may have been, there was still some great rock music out there in the wild for those who were looking for it. However, if Nickelback was the one rock band tearing up the charts, it's no wonder that people were wondering that the genre was dying.

Coming off the heals of the post grunge era, Nickelback is where we start to enter the realm of butt rock in the music industry, as Chad Kroeger sounds like he's singing like he's having some digestive problem. Whereas some of these songs may have sounded good in the right context, it's all but neutered whenever this guy opens his mouth. Then again, any act can just be bad. In order to be hated, you need to do a little bit more.

More than just your typical rock act, a lot of the reasons why Kroeger and co. get so much mudslinging in the press comes down to the way they write to try and cater to as many people as possible. Instead of just being an extension of your own heart and soul, 70% of Nickelback's catalog tends to read as nothing more than just washed up people looking to just make a quick buck off of listeners humming their hooks for a quick second. In an industry that prides itself on at least a little bit of integrity, this is pretty much the worst you could expect from the corporate side of rock and roll.
