10 Most Legendary Horrible Gigs In Rock Music History
1. Guns N Roses/Metallica in Montreal
At the start of the '90s, the idea of Metallica and Guns N Roses sharing the same bill in one night really seemed to sell itself. Here were two of the biggest bands in the world of hard rock, and the tour would involve both of them playing headlining sets, taking turns each night for which band would close things out. This was also the peak of excess though, and Montreal turned into a rock and roll disaster in the span of just a few hours onstage.
With Metallica being scheduled to take the stage first, the thrash giants had only made it through a handful of songs when James Hetfield mistimed his position onstage and was burned with a chemical flame during the beginning of Fade to Black. After having rushed him to the hospital to treat his injuries, everything fell on Guns to save the day by playing a blistering set, only for Axl Rose to pull one of his infamous diva moments.
Complaining of voice and monitor problems during rehearsals for the gig, Guns only spent the length of five songs onstage before Axl decided that he couldn't handle it anymore, walking offstage followed by the rest of the band. Having been cheapened out of two different shows, the audience devolved into chaos, storming into the stands and destroying everything in sight, with riot police eventually brought in to subdue the crowd. The Canadian people have a reputation for being a very patient bunch, but if you want them to really freak out, just give them Axl Rose.
