10 Most Legendary Horrible Gigs In Rock Music History
8. Red Hot Chili Peppers on SNL
The idea of becoming the biggest rock star in the world is not really everyone's goal when starting a band. Sometimes you just want to play for the sake of having fun, only to find yourself being shuffled around Hollywood and being followed by the paparazzi every single day. A lot of people would start to cave under the pressure, but John Frusciante's breaking point was captured on live TV when the Red Hot Chili Peppers reached New York.
After being scheduled to play two songs on SNL, the first one went off without a hitch until they came back from break and were supposed to play Under the Bridge. Starting with John's opening guitar figure, you can hear him just starting to bend the notes and making for a much more atonal rendition of the song, which turned into a living nightmare for Anthony Kiedis, who tried his best to sing around the bad bits and sell the rest of the song properly.
While most of the band were pissed at John for hanging them out to dry on live TV, nothing was going to stop him from doing what he wanted at this point. Being out of his mind on heroin to try and numb the pain that he felt, Frusciante only stuck around for a few more years before quitting the band right as they were about to go onstage in Japan. Their star may have been on the rise around this time, but the musical flame that started it all for John had started to get snuffed out.
