Rock 'n' roll and booze/drug fulled mayhem, go hand in hand. But not when it comes to Henry Rollins. Famous for his straightedge approach to living, the only thing fuelling Rollins was pure adrenaline and the spirit of punk rock.

Black Flag had been knocking around the underground scene for several years before Henry Rollins joined in 1981. A keen devotee of hardcore, and an avid fan of the group, Rollins would travel whenever the opportunity allowed, to see Black Flag perform. He soon struck up a friendship with the group, and requested to play a song with them during a New York show. The track in question, entitled "Clocked In" was selected due to Rollins having to driving back to Washington that same night, and start his day shift at an ice cream parlour.

The raw enthusiasm and wild dedication with which he performed, landed him a gig as their permanent frontman. The Rollins era of Black Flag was marked by their first studio album Damaged (1981) - the holy grail of hardcore - and the polarising but highly influential My War (1984).

Rollins' short fuse and propensity for getting into bust ups, encouraged audience members to both idolise and antagonise him. In the early days, if Rollins didn't get into an altercation with the crowed, then a Black Flag show was incomplete.

Before engrossing myself in the written word, I spent several years in the TV and film industry. During this time I became proficient at picking things up, moving things and putting things down again.
