9. Conspiracy Of One - The Offspring (2000)
By the time the 2000s rolled along, The Offspring - once the darlings of the underground punk scene - were mainstream and international pop-punk stars. Any credibility they had with die-hard punk fans, however, fizzled away with this album. Pretty Fly (for a White Guy) and the album it appeared on, Americana (1998) was the first nail in the coffin of The Offspring's reputation. But, this album was the nail that sealed the lid firmly shut.
As the band aged, their sound only regressed. Their earlier work was poppy, but spoke of all the confusing and ridiculous notions of youth; it was fitting for a group in their early 20s. But for a bunch of guys entering their 30s, singing about being a regular Bart Simpson, felt a little sad. The most defining track, Original Prankster relied on a Latin American inspired groove; but coupled with the pop punk melodies and lame lyrics, it just came across as goofy.
Like many of the groups of this era, their music became closely affiliated with the type of crude, teen sex comedies that littered the 2000s box office. I Want You Bad, featured on American Pie, and was equally as tacky and juvenile. If you have fond memories of this album, that's fine, we all did... The American Pie franchise was fun too, in a verbosely crude kind of way...
