5. Let It Die (2008)

Foo Fighters are known for their raucous and unharnessed take on hard rock. If you've ever had the privilege of seeing them live, you'll know they put on one hell of a show. You might be standing on your feet for almost two hours, but that time will fly by with all the excited enthusiasm generated by their performance.

The group's sound is defined by high powered, distorted guitars, pounding drum lines and the impassioned vocals. People often don't think of them as a band who have much experience in writing slower numbers, and admittedly they haven't gone down that route often, but when they do, damn is it good.

The group's sixth album saw Grohl play more with the quiet verse/loud chorus technique that Cobain was known for, but he mixed-up the formula for Let Die. He spent the first half of the track luring you into what seems like an uncharacteristically tender piece. But what starts as a fairly subdued track, ends in one of the more ferocious crescendos on any Foo Fighters number going. This is one to be played loud...
