10 Most Underrated Foo Fighters Songs
2. Subterranean - Sonic Highways
In the Foos' later years, the entire concept of Sonic Highways presented a bit of a mixed bag. As much as the idea of going into different cities and soaking up the influence of their respective studios was an admirable idea, the execution was a little bit clunky on the whole. Though each of the songs have their own vibe going for them, Dave always works well when he's going back to his old stomping grounds.
During the trip back to Seattle, Dave decided to record in the same studio where Nirvana recorded their last song, and the tone is there from the minute Subterranean comes on. Being much more of a ballad than any of the other tracks, there's a fair bit of melancholy in this song, almost like Dave is trying to shake the phantom limb that has been following him around in this city for years.
The addition of Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie also goes down incredibly smooth, with his high pitched backing vocals serving like a calming presence for the rest of the track. This might not be what you normally expect from the Foos, but that's not what Dave was intending to make on this record. This was all about getting reacquainted with what it means to be a musician, and this is exactly the kind of emotional powerhouse that you need in order to get over your demons.
